The wording

The invitation is a કંકોત્રી (kankotri) and opens with શ્રી ગણેશાય નમઃ. The wedding is શુભ લગ્ન (shubh lagna).

The chandlo — a red mark applied to the card itself — is traditional on printed kankotris and translates surprisingly well to video as an opening beat. Gujarati is set with correct matras and proofed before delivery.

When to send it, and the sequence

The order runs chandlo matli and gol dhana (engagement), mandap muhurat, pithi, garba and sangeet, then jaan, ponkhana at the door, hasta melap, saptapadi and vidaai.

Send six to eight weeks ahead. The garba usually needs its own invitation and its own list — it is frequently the largest single event of the wedding — and is best issued as a second card.

Motifs that carry meaning

Torana — the strung doorway hanging. It swings, which makes it a physical transition rather than a wipe.

Bandhani — tie-dye, shared with Rajasthan but worn differently; the gharchola red-and-white is specifically Gujarati bridal.

Garba and dandiya — the sticks and the circle. Best drawn as motion, not as objects.

Chandlo — the red mark on the card. One beat, at the opening.

The digital kankotri

A printed kankotri has a settled anatomy: the invocation at the head, the elders issuing the invitation, the couple, then the events with their times. A digital kankotri keeps that anatomy — what changes is delivery, not form.

The video opens where the printed card opens, names the same elders in the same order, and then does what print cannot: each event card in the sequence can be forwarded separately, and the garba night can go to a wider list than the wedding itself. Gujarati text is set and proofed by a reader before anything leaves the studio.
