Getting it right
What has to be on it
The muhurat time — to the minute, as your priest gave it — and the full address including the floor and the flat number. A housewarming invitation that makes the guest phone for directions has failed.
Say whether there is a meal after the puja, and roughly when. Guests attending a 6:40 am muhurat need to know whether to eat first.
When to send it
Two to three weeks ahead. Griha pravesh dates are set against the panchang and frequently land at short notice — several designs here can be delivered the same day for exactly that reason.
If the puja and the lunch have different lists, issue two cards. The puja is small; the lunch usually is not.
Motifs
Kalash — the pot at the threshold, and the milk boiled until it overflows. One event, and the whole video can be built on it.
Rangoli — the threshold drawing. Drawn to the width of a real doorway rather than as a floating ornament.
Toran — mango leaves across the door frame, the marker that the house is ready.
The wording, in Hindi
The ceremony is गृह प्रवेश (griha pravesh), and the one line no card may bury is the शुभ मुहूर्त (shubh muhurat) — the auspicious time. Guests plan their day around it, so we set it large, near the head of the card, never in the small print.
The invitation is usually issued by the family rather than an individual, and asks guests to come सपरिवार (saparivaar — with family). English, Hindi or both: the wording is set either way, and proofed by someone who reads it.
