The Journey of a Wedding Planner
Interviewer: Priya, thanks for joining us today. To begin with, could you please share a little bit about your journey into the world of wedding planning?
Priya: Thanks for having me! My journey into wedding planning was quite by chance. I have always had a thing for events and celebrations. I grew up in a family where every event was celebrated with great pomp and gaiety. I somehow took to the nuances of event planning. After studying event management, I started my career with a renowned event company. I soon realised that weddings were really my calling. What caught my interest was the fun and sentimental touch of weddings, and I knew this was exactly what I wanted to do.
The Art of Customisation
Interviewer: Indian weddings are known for their flamboyance and grandeur. How do you ensure that the weddings you plan are distinctive and ultra-customised for the couple?
Priya: Each and every wedding I plan is hugely personal. It all starts with an understanding of who the couple is, their personality, and their ideas for their big day. Every couple has a different journey, and it’s what I believe should be evident in their wedding. I dig deep into your background, culture, and taste to weave elements that are distinctly theirs alone. Every detail is ingrained with the couple’s personality, from the first bespoke invitations that tell their story to the custom decor that mirrors their tastes.
The Palette of Tradition: Balance of the Modern and Heritage
Interviewer: How do you go about striking the right balance between tradition and modern-day trends in a wedding?
Priya: While on the one hand, an Indian wedding is steeped in tradition, on the other, it is in constant flux, meeting the millennium with evolved tastes. Indeed, the balance between traditional and modern is a real tightrope walk. The challenge is to keep the older generation and the couple equally happy and satisfied. I hold interactive sessions with the families to perceive and understand the importance of rituals and customs. I am constantly updating myself on changing trends in wedding set-ups, fashion, or technology. By blending traditional and contemporary looks, I try to give my clients a harmonious mix, an aesthetic delight and pleasing to the eye in every way—honouring the past with a touch of the present.
Creating an Immersive Experience for the Senses
Interviewer: The sensory experience is quite deeply integrated into Indian weddings. How are you engaging with the senses to make the experience extraordinary and memorable?
Priya: An Indian wedding is just a sensory overload. The idea is, quite literally, that every element is crafted purposefully—to pull in the senses and present, somehow, an immersive experience. It is all about visual appeal—from bright and elaborate floral decor to the flamboyant attire of the bride and groom. Fragrant flowers and aromatic delicacies are used to make the occasion awaken the sense of smell. The sounds of traditional music and the cheerful chattering fill the air, and the spread of culinary delights tantalise the taste buds. Even the tactile elements, such as the feel of fabrics or the warmth of hospitality, come together to create that experience. One thinks of a multisensory journey that will leave an unforgettable impression.
Negotiating Challenges: A Planner’s Point of View
Interviewer: Every wedding will have inevitable hitches and challenges. What do you think some common challenges are, and how do you work your way around them?
Priya: Challenges are intrinsic in every Indian wedding. The most common challenge will have to be trying to find the right balance with the expectations of different stakeholders involved: the couple, families concerned, and, on occasions, extended relatives and friends. It all comes down to effective communication and realistic expectations. The other challenge is unpredictable elements, such as the weather, especially for the outdoor weddings. One must have a good backup plan. Beyond that, having to take care of several vendors and ensuring a perfect day without any blame is really heavy. It requires one to be flexible fast in resolving problems that may come up, and to remain calm under pressure and all circumstances.
The Future of Indian Weddings: Trends and Innovations
Interviewer: What does the future look like for Indian weddings with regard to the trends and innovations?
Priya: Innovations and new trends just keep coming up with the ever-changing face of Indian weddings. Now, the trend is towards sustainable weddings that involve eco-friendly decorations, digital invites, and less of everything that produces wastage. Technology, too, contributes to this, with the rise of virtual weddings and the live streaming of marriages, all the more so post the pandemic. Personalisation will continue to be huge, with couples looking for unique and meaningful experiences. Another growing trend is destination weddings, where couples decide on some exotic location for their celebrations—a unique travel-tradition blend.
Tips for Aspiring Wedding Planners from A Celebrated Planner
Interviewer: What would be your advice to those who want to become wedding planners?
Priya: My advice for all the aspiring wedding planners is fairly simple: just keep following your passions and work hard.
- Gather experience by interning or working with an established planner.
- Make strong vendor connections and contacts.
- Be observant with detail and develop great organisational skills.
- Carefully listen to the client and understand their vision.
- You must turn their dreams into reality with empathy and clear communication.
And the best part is that each wedding is a new journey—different from the last one. Take all the challenges to your heart, work around them and celebrate all the achievements. Push the creative envelope each time, and you’ll end up being a celebrity yourself.
Unforgettable Moments
Interviewer: Would you share a story or perhaps an unforgettable moment from one of the weddings you had planned?
Priya: There are just too many memorable moments to recapture in words, but I feel one of the most special was a wedding for which we prepared a surprise flash mob dance during the reception. The bride was a dancer, and secretly, her friends and family rehearsed for weeks. When the music came on, and they all started dancing, it was absolutely priceless seeing the look on the face of the couple. It was such a good reminder of how all the effort and love put into these celebrations really makes them so special. Scenes such as this one are a silver lining and make it easy to remember why it is that I do what I do.
The Heartbeat of Indian Weddings
Once the conversation with Priya Mehra was over, it became evident that the magic of Indian weddings does not lie in their grandeur but, indeed, in the heartfelt efforts of wedding planners that bring it to life.
